How Ramadan can help you live longer!

By Rania Loghmari

Every year, Muslims around the globe fast during the Holy month of Ramadan from dawn until sunset. While religion says that Ramadan purifies the soul, science also says that it can purify the body.

Numerous studies have discovered that fasting can help you live longer, control your weight, improve your mood and concentration, increase your energy level, and improve the quality of your sleep. A recent study published in The American Journal of Medicine shows that fasting can help reduce high blood pressure and hypertension.

This is because fasting helps stabilize blood sugar levels. Consuming foods like junk food and processed sugar spikes blood sugar levels, putting much strain on the body to stabilize it back to normal again. This can make you feel sick, have low energy and even dizzy.

It can take about six to eight hours for food to pass through the stomach to your intestine. And until it gets fully absorbed, it can take up to 36 hours, creating much strain on the body. Fasting can help alleviate that.

Fasting can also help you reduce your risk of cancer. But how? Basically, fasting helps starve those cancer cells. Fasting or fasting-mimicking diets (FMDs) help stabilize the body’s blood sugar and metabolism, thus lowering inflammation in the body as well as creating an environment that can reduce the ability of cancer cells to survive.
