{"id":1876,"date":"2023-12-22T23:38:02","date_gmt":"2023-12-22T23:38:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medperspective.org\/?p=1876"},"modified":"2023-12-22T23:38:03","modified_gmt":"2023-12-22T23:38:03","slug":"metas-systemic-censorship-of-palestine-related-content-human-rights-watch-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medperspective.org\/index.php\/2023\/12\/22\/metas-systemic-censorship-of-palestine-related-content-human-rights-watch-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta\u2019s systemic censorship of Palestine-related content, Human Rights Watch report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/report\/2023\/12\/21\/metas-broken-promises\/systemic-censorship-palestine-content-instagram-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> released by Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused Meta, parent of the two social media platforms Facebook and Instagram, of censoring pro-Palestine content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The report explains that \u201cbetween October and November 2023, Human Rights Watch documented over 1,050 takedowns and other suppression of content Instagram and Facebook that had been posted by Palestinians and their supporters, including about human rights abuses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Reports about Meta\u2019s bias predate the current war. In 2021, pro-Palestine online activists complained their content was removed as they protested the evacuation of Palestinian families from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">On many occasions, Meta apologized for the censorship of content related to Palestine and \u201cpromised to address it,\u201d the report reads. Earlier in October, Instagram <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-67169228\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apologized<\/a> for adding the term \u201cterrorist\u201d to the biographies of some Palestinian and non-Palestinian activists defending Palestinian rights. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">According to the HRW report, Meta\u2019s conduct has shown \u201csix key patterns of undue censorship , each recurring at least 100 times, including 1) removal of posts, stories, and comments; 2) suspension or permanent disabling of accounts; 3) restrictions on the ability to engage with content\u00ad\u2014such as liking, commenting, sharing, and reposting on stories\u2014for a specific period, ranging from 24 hours to three months; 4) restrictions on the ability to follow or tag other accounts; 5) restrictions on the use of certain features, such as Instagram\/Facebook Live, monetization, and recommendation of accounts to non-followers; and 6) \u201cshadow banning,\u201d the significant decrease in the visibility of an individual\u2019s posts, stories, or account, without notification, due to a reduction in the distribution or reach of content or disabling of searches for accounts.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Besides, several users have reported not being able to interact with \u201cHuman Rights Watch\u2019s post calling for evidence of online censorship, which was flagged as \u201cspam.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The report identifies 4 systemic factors that contributed to the censorship:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Flaws in Meta policies, principally its Dangerous Organizations and Individuals (DOI), which contains \u201csweeping bans on vague categories of speech, such as \u201cpraise\u201d and \u201csupport\u201d of \u201cdangerous organizations,\u201d which it relies heavily on the United States government\u2019s designated lists of terrorist organizations to define.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cInconsistent and opaque application of Meta policies\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Compliance with some governments\u2019 requests to remove content<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Excessive reliance on automated tools to address Palestine-related content.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Speaking to AlMayadeen, American journalist Dan Cohen, said Israel has influence inside social media giants like X and Meta via the U.S. government.
